If you already have a
turntable, you can greatly improve its performance with a new cartridge, phono
stage or record cleaning machine. Here are some great selections for you!
In this digital age, a lot of folks aren't sure why
they need a phono stage to play their turntable. Here's a very short
course for you:
Records are "cut" using an equalization curve that adjusts
the recorded frequencies so that they will fit in the record's groove.
This is a standardized curve called the RIAA equalization curve (RIAA =
Recording Industry Association of America). One of the functions of a
phono stage is to reverse this equalization curve so that when the record is
played, it sounds the way it's supposed to. Phono cartridges
output a very low signal. This signal must be amplified before it gets
to your preamp or receiver. So, the other principle function of
a phono stage is to boost the signal so that it's loud enough to be listened
to properly. There are MM (moving magnet) cartridges and MC (moving
coil) cartridges. MM cartridges have a much higher output than do MC
cartridges. Accordingly, MC cartridges require a phono stage that has
additional gain appropriate for low or medium output MC cartridges. A
standard MM phono stage will give you all the gain you need for a MM phono
cartridge.

Phono Stages:
Bellari VP-29
The
vp 29 is a solid state phono preamp for use with moving magnet and high output
moving coil cartridges. The vp 29 is designed to amplify an RIAA equalized phono
signal to a hi level signal. It’s cheap cheerful and manufactured in the USA.

Bellari VP-130
The
vp 130 is a tube phono preamp with a built in headphone amplifier for use with
moving magnet and high output moving coil cartridges. The vp 130 is designed to
amplify an RIAA equalized phono signal to a hi level signal. Since the unit
utilizes tube circuitry the resulting output signal is more warm and musical
than solid state preamplifiers. The real kicker aside from the price and stellar
sound is that it's manufactured in the US.

Bellari VP-530
The
vp 530 is a USB/tube phono preamp for use with moving magnet and high output
moving coil cartridges. It includes a built in headphone amplifier,
burr-brown analog to digial (A2D) converter with USB output, and RIAA curve/flat
EQ. The vp 530 is designed to amplify an RIAA equalized phono signal to a hi
level signal or provide a USB digital output. Since the unit utilizes tube
circuitry the resulting output signal is more warm and musical than solid state
preamplifiers.

NAD PP-2
Many
of today's stereo and AV amplifiers and receivers have either eliminated the
phonograph input altogether, or included a low cost - and low performance -
circuit for attaching your turntable. The PP 2 offers superb performance in a
clean and simple package for a very reasonable cost. The NAD PP 2 is a vastly
improved successor to the very popular PP 1, arguably the most successful device
of its kind. Selectable MM and MC Phono Stage.

Grado PH-1
The
new Grado Phono Preamp, model PH-1, represents the most successful solution to
one of the most complex technical challenges in the field of audio that Grado
Labs has ever tackled. It can be compared to the undertaking of designing our
highly acclaimed phono cartridges, headphones and Grado's world renowned RA-1
headphone amplifier over the past several years. The design goals were for a
truly superb sounding phono preamp to work equally well with both low and high
output cartridges with negligible noise. We wanted a phono preamp with ultra
wide band pass, high overload, virtually perfect RIAA amplitude and phase
coherency, and very low output impedance. This was the challenge set forth! This
has been accomplished!

Musical Surroundings Nova Phonomena
Based
on the discrete, dual mono circuit developed by designer Michael Yee for the
SuperNova, the Nova has rear panel accessible switches for gain and loading. It
features 2 rechargeable internal NiMH dual mono battery packs with Smart Sensing
auto recharge feature. All AC and charging circuits automatically disconnect
when listening in battery mode. The Nova features a cool proximity detection
switch on the front panel with status LEDs for changing mode.

Musical Surroundings SuperNova II

The SuperNova II is a two input phono preamp with another
line level input intended for use with more than one turntable or a turntable
with more than one tonearm. There is user adjustable loading and gain for each
of the inputs. The loading and gain is set via switches and is accessible from
the rear of the chassis. With its 11 position variable output switch, this
unit may be used without a separate preamp, playing directly to a power amp.
The SuperNova switching between the inputs does not
actually switch the inputs and loading. Instead, it has three independent
front ends--the current source is switched to the one that will be active.
The outputs are summed into the backend circuitry. In this way no switching
occurs in the signal path when not using the switched attenuator.

Whest TWO MM/MC Phono Stage -
$1,195

Based entirely on the famed PS.20 the new entry level Whest TWO
utilizes approx 90% of the former’s electronic design but with a twist, which is
about 10% of the MC REF V. Yes, during the design stages of the Whest TWO we
made a mad decision to incorporate some of the MC REF V ideas, namely it’s
hybrid active/passive RIAA filter stage. Unlike other units at this price point
that use the standard ‘input-Passive RIAA filter-output’ configuration, the
Whest TWO uses an identical configuration which was borrowed from the MC REF V
and this can also be found in the PS.30R. This new RIAA configuration along
with the high-current output stage means the Whest TWO can resolve much more
information compared to any of its rivals..... it really does set the standard
in the sub-$2,000 category
