Jazz Capital of... well, very south

Here's Ed Sapiega's latest edition of "Jazz, Man" for your edification and reading pleasure.

Jazz Musicians from Florida

A little research reveals that many jazz musicians were born in just a few states – Michigan, Illinois, New York, and Pennsylvania.  So then, what about Florida?  How about a few pleasant surprises?

On the current scene, there are pianists  Marcus Roberts and Brad Mehldau, both from Jacksonville along with Pete Martin of Deland (played with Terrence Blanchard and Joshua Redman).  We should include saxophonist David Sanborn (Tampa) with that group too.  Stretching back to the beginning, there is Jimmy McLin of Brooksville, a banjoist and guitarist, who played with James P. Johnson and Willie the Lion Smith.  And in between there is Junior Cook tenor saxophonist (Pensacola) who played with Horace Silver and Blue Mitchell; Buster Cooper (St. Pete) trombonist with Benny Goodman and Duke Ellington; Machito (Tampa) percussionist extraordinaire with Charlie Parker and Stan Kenton); Mickey Roker (Miami) played with with Sonny Rollins and Milt Jackson later becoming the house drummer at Blue Note records; and Charles Tolliver (Jacksonville) the trumpeter who played with Blakey  and Rollins and founded Strata East Records with his good friend and pianist Stanley Cowell.

Then there are those who are in the pantheon of jazz:   Avant Garde tenor saxophonist Archie Shepp (Ft. Lauderdale), trumpeSee full size imageter Fats Navarro (Key West), alto saxophonist and arranger Gigi Gryce (Pensacola) and, last but certainly not least, Julian “Cannonball” Adderley (Tampa) the alto saxophonist, band leader and participant on Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue.  Brother Nat was born in Tampa as well.

So,  Florida can hold its own in the jazz birthplace sweepstakes.  By the way, “Cannonball” was derived from his nickname “Cannibal” that originated due to his prodigious appetite!
