Upgrade your system — you'll be glad you did

Did you know:

Everything in the signal path affects the signal?

Ideally, cables in an audio/video system would be absolutely neutral?

No cable (regardless of hype or price) is neutral?

All cables will impact the sound somewhat differently?

A "warm" cable can help to tame an overly bright system?

A cable that emphasizes the upper frequencies can help to bring a dull system to life?

The best cables for your system are not necessarily the most expensive ones?

The best cables for your system will depend on your room and preferences as well as your gear?

Cables in AV systems are typically the most overlooked components in the signal path?

Proper cables can make as much (or more) improvement in a system than a major component upgrade?

There are still people out there who insist that cables and wires make no audible difference in an audio system. They are, of course, welcome to their opinions.  With such a viewpoint, however, it is almost a certainty that their personal audio systems are not performing to their full potential.  It's a fact, if it's in the signal path (and interconnects and speaker cables are), it's creating an effect on the sound.  Period.   

What that effect is depends upon the cable and your equipment.  Whether it's good or bad depends entirely upon your setup, the type of music you listen to, how you listen and what you like.

While all of this is highly specific to the system and listener, there are a few generalities that I feel comfortable in making:

1.  Throw away those cheap cables that came with your gear.  Almost any after-market cable will be an improvement.

2.  Shorter cables will perform better than longer ones. 

3.  If you have to choose between long interconnects or long speaker wire, choose long interconnects (a too-long speaker cable can adversely effect the damping factor of your amp which can give you bass response that is loose, sloppy and poorly controlled.

4.  Keep the speaker wire to each speaker the same length (each amp channel should see the same electrical load for best performance).

5.  If one speaker cable is very long, don't wind the excess into a circle.  Doing so will make the cable more inductive which will roll off the high frequencies and choke dynamics.

6.  Separate digital cables from analog cables as well as you can.  Digital noise can adversely effect your analog signals.

7.  Where cables cross power cords, have them cross at a right angle.  This will reduce induced noise and distortion from the power cord's field.

8.  Periodically disconnect your interconnects and speaker cables and clean the terminals.  Oxidation will build up and needs to be removed.

9.  Avoid putting very sharp bends in your cables and interconnect.

Consignment

How It Works

At consignment businesses, consignment fees typically run as high as 50% and 60%.  But we've kept ours at 40% for years. 

CONSIGNMENT OPTION 1

This is full-service consignment.  Full service means we display, advertise, present and demonstrate your gear, just as we do our own new gear.  We handle any customer inquiries (send them pictures, specs and other relevant information) and find a buyer; we process the payment and deliver the gear to the buyer; we handle after-purchase questions and issues and mail you a check for the net proceeds from the sale.  For full-service consignment, Consignment Option 1, the fee is 40%. 

CONSIGNMENT OPTION 2

Consignment Level 2 is the same as Level 1, but you keep the gear until it’s sold.  We advertise and promote your gear, handle customer inquiries (send them pictures, specs and other relevant information), find a buyer and handle the sale.  But once it’s sold, you deliver the item to the buyer yourself.  We send you a check for your net proceeds from the sale.  For Consignment Option 2, the fee is 25%.

Increase Your Proceeds by 10%:  This is simple.  If you leave your proceeds from the sale on account with us to apply to your own product purchases here at Sweet Home Audio, we reduce our consignment fee by 10%.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  When we sell a used item, we do our very best to represent the product exactly as it is.  This is very important!One of our most critical operating principles is that "we deliver what we promise."  This is not just a slogan for us but the way we actually operate.  When we have the used item here in our store, we can verify the operational status and physical condition of the products.  When we don't, we try to get pictures and other information about the items so that we gain confidence that the product is as stated.  In these cases, we also delay payment until the buying customer has received the item and verified that it truly is as promised. 

Existing agreements:  Needless to say (but here it is anyway!), all current consignments that we now have will continue under whatever agreement was made at the time of the consignment.  The above Consignment Levels apply to all new consignments.  Of course, our policy to deliver what we promise applies to everything we do.
