Over the years our consignment sales operation has grown to become one of our larger and busier departments.  We continue to receive a plethora of excellent used gear all at great prices and in great condition.  We decided to contribute to this motion by making it easier to see the gear we have available and to learn more about each product.  So, rather than posting a list of the items in our Newsletter (as we have for a long time), we have developed a new Demo, Used and Consignment webpage that we will frequently update.  The Demo, Used and Consignment list was updated once a month, with the publishing of the newsletter.  With this new webpage, you'll get up-to-date information (no waiting for the next newsletter to get current data).  As you'll see, the Demo, Used and Consignment webpage still lists each product that's here on consignment.  Now, however, each item has a link to it's own page where you can see pictures and read more about it.  Check it out and let us know what you think.

Sometimes you can run into problems selling off your old audio gear.  Here are a few of the issues that often get in the way: no boxes (can't ship the unit); no time to look for potential buyers; no time to demonstrate your gear when potential buyers find you; and certainly the inability to process a credit card can be a deal breaker.  And there's the high risk of selling to someone you don't know.  (Will their check bounce?  Is their money order valid? And so on.)  Maybe you would really prefer not to have strangers coming to your home to look at your stereo gear.

Buying used products is not without its risks either:  is the seller for real?  Is the product exactly as advertised?  Do I have any recourse if it is not?  And those are just a few of the risks involved.

Scam artists are seemingly a dime a dozen, especially in this age of instant information and ready access.  When you buy or sell used gear through Sweet Home Audio, you have an honest resource that will shelter you from the risks of buying and selling used gear.  With every purchase or sales transaction, we do more than hope it goes well, we make sure it does.  We know what we like as consumers; we strive to treat our customers the way we would like to be treated.  The customer is our most valued resource after all.

We'll take the pain and uncertainty out of the process for you─both buyer and seller.  Consignment is a popular service. We display your audio gear in our showrooms, advertise and promote it and demonstrate it.  We also handle the payment and usually the shipping.

We're a high-end store with high standards so we accept only products that meet our standards.  When you buy a used item through Sweet Home Audio, you can be sure that it's just exactly as it is advertised and we do stand behind every sale we make.

Eric Dolphy: "...Gone in the air"

Here's Ed Sapiega's latest edition of "Jazz, Man" for your edification and reading pleasure.

    Eric Dolphy -

When you hear music, after it’s over, it’s gone in the air.  You can never capture it again. - Eric Dolphy

Eric Dolphy was another short, bright flame in jazz history primarily recording from 1958-1964. There are a few earlier recordings but military service intervened. His first major break occurred in LA when he joined the Chico Hamilton group in 1958.  Word of his musicianship as a multi-instrumentalist playing alto saxophone, flute, and then bass clarinet, preceded him by the time he moved to NYC in early 1960.  He quickly became a leader and an in-demand session partner.  He recorded his first album “Outward Bound”, and completed recording sessions with Charles Mingus, Oliver Nelson and Ken McIntyre (another altoist) by July of that year.  He became a regular with Mingus, particularly on European tours.  He participated in influential recordings such as Gunther Schuller’s “Jazz Abstractions”, Ornette Coleman’s “Free Jazz” and his own “Far Cry” with trumpeter Booker Little in the span of two (!) days at the end of 1960.  In 1961, he continued his ubiquitous career playing with Olive Nelson on the classic “Blues and the Abstract Truth”, George Russell’s “Ezz-Thetics”, John Coltrane, Ron Carter, and Mal Waldron.   This five month period was capped off with his own multi-volume “At the Five Spot” (recommended) showcasing his work with Booker Little in a live setting.  Then more solo releases before joining Mingus for the very well documented 1964 tour of Europe.  After giving notice to Mingus, the ongoing discussion about him leaving and Mingus entreating him to stay was recorded in many versions of “So Long Eric”. The recordings were essentially intimate conversations between the two men on their instruments.  Eric stayed on in Europe and, tragically, died in a diabetic coma.  It was not clear if it was undiagnosed or if it was insulin shock.  Although a great musician was lost, more importantly a great and spiritual man left us.    Mingus considered him to be his most talented interpreter.  Coltrane thought him to his only musical equal.  In Coltrane’s words:  “Whatever I’d say would be an understatement.  I can only say my life was made much better by knowing him.  He was one of the greatest people I’ve ever known, as a man, a friend, and a musician”.
