If you're in the market for loudspeakers, you really need to hear these wonders! The Nola Contender is a slim floor-standing tower loudspeaker that is the step up from the very popular Nola Boxer bookshelf. Compared to the Boxer, the Contender offers sonic improvements in the areas of depth reproduction, dynamic range, low level resolution and bass extension. The low frequency response has been extended to a conservative 35 Hz with usable response to 25 Hz. The bass quality of the Contender, however, maintains the quick and nimble characteristic of the Boxer. The driver complement consists of two low mass 6½ inch bass drivers and one high resolution silk soft dome tweeter in a vertical array. Each bass driver is housed in a separate chamber and is individually ported. This technique, while costly, eliminates driver interference and provides increased clarity. The upper driver is ported to the rear, while the lower driver is loaded by a downward firing port. The chambers are tuned to different frequencies to provide the smoothest and most extended in-room bass response. The Contender is a true 3-way system with the benefit of increased mid-range clarity, yet it maintains the coherency of a good 2-way. We feel this approach, while more costly, is superior to a 2½-way design where both the bass and bass/midrange drivers have to cope with deep bass reproduction. The Contender maintains the smooth 8-ohm impedance characteristic and high 90dB sensitivity of the Boxer so that use with amplifiers of 30 watts or more is feasible. The Contender footprint is the same as the Boxer.

CD-500 The CD-500 is an outstanding CD player offering HDCD decoding. It has 192 kHz, 24 bit Burr Brown 1792u DAC chips in the critical digital to analog converter section. The CD-500 contains audio grade Elna capacitors in the audio circuit for incredible bass, extremely musical midrange, and extended highs. By having the ability to upsample a CD disk from 44.1 kHz to 96, 192, 384, 512 or 768 kHz it can find the perfect sample rate for each disk in your musical library. Discrete RS 232 and Infrared command codes make it custom installation ready. The CD-500 is available with a silver or black anodized aluminum front panel. This is the last CD player you'll need to buy. At just $2995, it will bring your CD collection to life like never before. Here's an excerpt from a recent review: "I don't get excited about redbook CD too often, but I must have played 200 discs or so during my time with the Cary unit. My conclusion? The CD 500 is the best non-SACD player I've heard among any costing up to $5,000. Digital has never sounded so good to my ears, and with the up-sampling options it's possible to achieve SACD-like results with redbook discs. Although I don't have experience with the megabuck (10K+) players on the market, it would take a strong persuader to shake me off the Cary tree. At $2,995, this is not an entry-level player or one for casual listeners. But if your shelves are sagging with CDs and you want to hear them at their best, the CD 500 cannot be recommended strongly enough. Is it time to up-sample? I think so." -Todd Whitesel, Audio Video Revolution Click on the Audio Video Revolution Logo for the complete review

More than a hobby
Here's Ed Sapiega's latest edition of "Jazz, Man" for your edification and reading pleasure.Collecting Recordings I remember the first one, The Kinks Greatest Hits in mono. I still have it. To my parents, collecting records was a waste of money. I should note, however, that their love of Broadway show tunes has served me well as I continue to learn the saxophone. So, other than it being a subversive act, buying records (and sneaking them into the house) was flat out fun. You could find records at department stores and appliance stores. And, if you were lucky, your travels brought you to the superstores – Peaches, Virgin, or Tower. Miles of aisle to flip through to find something new or different. The thrill of the “hunt”, the tactile joy of fast flipping, switching places with the guy to your right to see what was in the next bin over. Loved it. And I collected and then the jazz bug bit so I collected more. I pretty much skipped the cassette collecting, had a brief encounter with eight tracks due to a short lived used car, and then went nuts with CD’s. The part I miss, however, was the hunt. Finding the special recording that I didn’t even know existed. Now I go onto the internet and search or page through listings of recordings. It’s not the same because I have to know what I am looking for first. There is no flipping through the records, much better albums than with CD’s in their obnoxious reusable plastic cases. In exchange, however, we are now blessed with tons of material. Re-releases with alternate tracks. Boxed sets with every album plus the outtakes, alternates, and breakdowns during the recording. I learned that even the greatest occasionally squeaked unintentionally. Recordings by minor or obscure artists that we latter day collectors missed when they came around the first time. Now we get to acquire and hear all of this wonderful music. Do I need sixteen CD’s recorded by Coltrane on Prestige? In my case, yes. But, occasionally, I get surprised and find myself in the hunt, once again. Odd places sell albums and CD’s: antique stores, second hand stores, pawn shops, or, occasionally, a consignment store. And then there are the “specialty” record stores, a place like Sweet Home Audio, with an aisle of well chosen records and CD’s, apparently collected by people in the know and in wonderful condition. I smile. I get ready. And I flip to my heart’s content. And I always find a “five star”. Which is what I tell my wife when I bring it home. I don’t have to sneak it in, but I do have to have some reason why I bought yet another. - Ed Sapiega
